Liverpool rekindled their hopes to place in Top 4
Liverpool rekindled their hopes of a top four finish after a 2-0 win over Newcastle United.
It helped them close the gap on fourth place to Manchester City to just four points with six games remaining in the campaign. Just after the 4-1 thrashing at the hands of Arsenal, Brendan Rodgers admitted that it was near impossible for Liverpool to know sneak into the top four. After having returned to the Champions League this campaign, the former Swansea manager would have been hoping to continue this presence in the Premier European competition. This was very important for the club when it comes to attracting top quality players.
Just when it seemed that every hope had been lost after the defeat against Arsenal, Manchester City’s poor form continued with a 4-2 defeat against archrivals Manchester United. Liverpool took full advantage of this defeat by winning their game in hand against Newcastle. This moved them into within four points of City and there is a real belief that the club will be able to take advantage of City’s slump in form. The reigning Premier League champions have managed just four victories in 2015. Rodgers stated that Liverpool will be fighting until the end to finish in the top four.
"We want to fight until the very end. We knew we had to win tonight, and we'll take that into the weekend. Manchester City have maybe opened the door up for the teams in below. So, for us, you've still got to win your games, and the teams above us are in an advantageous position. But for us, if we win our games and perform well, we'll see what happens. We have won 10 of 13 games but have had two disappointing results. It is always a crisis when you lose games but we knew we had to respond and got ourselves into the [FA Cup] semi-final,” said Rodgers.
